BDRRMC participates in Workshop on Liquefaction and Landslides

Kgd. Bobby MirasBarangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committee (BDRRMC), chaired by Captain John “Jojo” M. Abad and Kagawad Roberto “Bobby” B. Miras, participated in the United Nations (UN) International Strategy for Disaster Reduction: Making Cities Resilient on October 21, 2015 (Wednesday) in the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Training Room at the DRRM Building, Quezon City (QC) Hall.

Dubbed as “Workshop on Liquefaction and Landslides,” the whole-day affair began with a registration of participants at 8:00 AM, immediately followed by an invocation and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem.

2nd District Councilor and Batasan Hills’s immediate past chairman, Honorable Ranulfo “Rannie” Z. Ludovica, delivered the welcome remarks. Hon. Ludovica is a member of the QC Committee on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction.

Objectives of the workshop were elaborated by Police Chief Superintendent Elmo D.G. San Diego, PhD, PESE, head of the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) and Action Officer of the QC Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO).

Mr. Julius Vincent P. Umali, Geologist II from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) described rain-induced landslides in the Philippines.

Liquefaction hazards in QC were discussed by Mr. Daniel Jose L. Buhay, Geologist/Science Research Specialist (GIS) I from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), while, liquefaction and its effects were tackled by Miss Catherine Anne Madamba, GIS Assistant from Earthquake and Megacities Initiative (EMI).

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)’s Miss Marianne B. Anceno, LG Operations Officer IV, talked about disaster preparedness initiatives.

Mr. Karl Michael E. Marasigan, Officer-In-Charge for the Disaster Control Division of the QCDRRMO and a proactive Batasan Hills resident, reiterated the initiatives of the local government.

An ice-breaker was inserted right after lunch.

Mr. Alejandro “Alex” Adan, former kagawad, shared his experiences being in Payatas.

Mr. Rod Tajon from the Center for Disaster Preparedness (CDP) facilitated the workshop on contingency planning after enumerating his inputs on emergency planning for liquefaction.

Batasan Hills’ representatives, namely: Capt. Abad; Kgd. Miras; Kgds. Luisito “Tata” Z. Ludovica, Edgar “Junjun” S. Macario, Charlie O. Mangune and Ernesto “Ernie” S. Custodio; traffic enforcers; Land and Housing Committee personnel; and, among others, seriously thought of processes and planned courses of action tailor-fit for Batasan Hills.

“Workshop on Liquefaction and Landslides” ended at 5:00 PM with a call to action for the UN International Day of Disaster.
